Army tanks secure the square...|| The mass demonstrations across Egypt and the resignation of Husni Mubarak in early 2011 had a major impact on the political landscape in the Near and Middle East. The protests were fueled by the hope for more freedom and social justice. Between 2011 and 2013 Egypt saw more freedom of expression and a political active civil society. The election of its first civil president Mohamed Morsi supported the hope for lasting change. The one year term of office of Mohamed Morsi was characterized by the authoritarian takeover of the government by the Muslim Brotherhood and the violent clashes with protesters that felt betrayed. Egypt was caught in a cycle of violence. The forced resignation of Mohamed Morsi and the military takeover led by Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in July 2013 reinstated the autocratic police state in Egypt and turned back the wheel of time.
