WELTRAUM MARS LANDSCHAFT
This image taken by the Mars Global Surveyor Spacecraft released, on Monday, December 4, 2000 by NASA shows layered sedimentary material in Mars' southern Holden Crater. Holden is located at 26.5¬¡S, 33.9¬¡W, and has a diameter of 141kms, 88 miles. The origin of these layers is not known, but like those found in other craters on Mars, they might have resulted from deposition of sediment in a lake that would have occupied Holden Crater. Nasa scientists announced that if these layers once hosted Martian lakes fossil evidence of life on Mars could be found. (KEYSTONE/- PHOTO/AFP/NASA/STR)
