WELRAUM KOMET "WILD 2"
This composite image was taken by the navigation camera of NASA's Stardust spacecraft during it's Jan. 2, 2004, flyby of the comet Wild 2. A short exposure image showing surface detail of the comet was overlain on a long exposure image taken ten seconds later showing the jets of dust and gas streaming from the comet into space leaving a trail millions of kilometers long. "This spectacular composite image shows a surface feature unlike any other planetary surface seen to date in our solar system", says Prof. Donald Brownlee, the Stardust Principal Investigator from the University of Washington.
