TURKEY BURIAL
Local residents of Mardin, eastern Turkey say prayers before a coffin containing a mother and her four months unborn child Friday 20th June 2003. Semsiye alak was stoned to death by her own family after getting pregnant out of wedlock with a stranger, offending Islamic law. She died of her wounds after two days. Since her family did not remove the dead body from the mortuary, the municipality ordered that the body be taken to a desolate mass graveyard in this region for burial, drawing national and international press attention.
