FLUORESCENT MILLIPEDE
California is home to the world's only known group of bioluminescent millipedes, genus Motyxia. The light produced by these millipedes apparently ranges from white to greenish white. This is a demonstration of fluorescence under black light. Fluorescence is defined as visible light emitted by a substance that has absorbed light of a different wavelength. Motyxia sequoia alia is one of the bioluminescent species from the southern Sierra Nevada range. Compare to images taken under natural light and by its own light.
