Independence Pass, Colorado: Top of Independence Pass. Snow on the ground and skim ice on the pond in mid-September. State Highway 82 skirts some of Colorado's famous 14-ers, mountains more than 14,000 feet high as it crests the Continental Divide at 12,095 feet above sea level.
