FORSCHUNG PHYSIK
Production and decay of charged and neutral kaon particles. In this photograph from the Saclay bubble chamber at CERN, an antiproton enters from upper right and annihilates near centre with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid, creating a positive pion (short track heading up), a negative kaon (thick track heading left), and a neutral kaon which leaves no track but reveals itself when it decays into two pions (forking tracks in bottom right quadrant). The negative kaon decays into an unseen neutral lambda particle, which travels up the picture and decays to form the forked tracks (proton and pion) at top left. The spiral is a low- energy electron. Background has been coloured. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CERN) === ===
