HOCHSEE TIEFSEETAUCHEN PICCARD 1953
Jacques Piccard, wearing life jacket at right center, assists his father, Prof. Auguste Piccard, wearing beret, center, out of turret of their steel diving boat, the bathyscafe Trieste, near the island of Ponza in Italy on Sept. 30, 1953. The two scientists descended in their craft to a record 10,339 feet below the surface of the Tyrrenhian Sea. They are assisted by seamen from an Italian corvette which acted as their escort. They described the depths as a grave-like calm and Stygian blackness broken only by ghostly flickers of phosphorescence hinting at unknown forms of life. (AP Photo/Walter Attenni)
