LACRIMAL GLAND, SEM
Lacrimal gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a freeze- fractured lacrimal gland. The lacrimal glands produce tears, which keep the front of the eye moist and lubricated. The lacrimal secretion (one droplet seen, red, centre) also contains lysozyme, an anti-bacterial enzyme that helps to protect the eye from infection. The glandular tissue consists of secretory cells (brown) separated by connective tissue (green). Magnification: x200 at 6x7cm size. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/STEVE GSCHMEISSNER)
