FILES-FRANCE-CULTURE-US-RACISM
(FILES) French poet, novelist, and essayist Louis Aragon (L) and US jazz singer Paul Robeson (C) attend the Communist backed "World Congress of partisans of Peace" in April 1949 at Paris Salle Pleyel. Who were black civil rights activists before Martin Luther King, the Black Panthers or Angela Davis ? In Paris, an exhibition brings out of the shadows three women who, from the 1930s, worked on a "Black International". Katherine Dunham (1909-2006), Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) and Eslanda Robeson (1895-1965): three names which will mean nothing to the general public, with the exception of the first among dance connoisseurs, but which are figures in the political history of the United States.
