POE VENTILATION EXPERIMENT
Poe ventilation experiment. Rabbit being kept alive using a mechanical ventilator invented by US ventilation pioneer George Poe (centre, 1846-1914). Poe was the inventor of an early mechanical ventilator, with a nationwide tour in 1889 demonstrating how asphyxiated rabbits and rats could be resuscitated. Later work, despite near-blindness and paralysis, resulted in a 1907 tour. However, his design was later superceded by others. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the period from the 1890s to the 1930s.
