ROTAVIRUSES, TEM
Rotaviruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of two rotaviruses on a fractal background. These viruses are named due to their wheel-like appearance. The virus at left has a double capsid (protein coat) enclosing its genetic material, while the other has a single capsid. Rotaviruses cause gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in humans, commonly infecting the intestines of young children. They are transmitted in faeces. Magnification unknown.
