PINOCCHIO, CRASH TEST DUMMY
Crash test dummy. Design of Pinocchio, the first child-sized crash test dummy. Weighing 15kg, he was designed in the mid 1960s for the sled tests that were the main method of impact research at that time. Pinocchio is made from wood, with steel joints and a leather-covered body. He has a strain gauge in his head to measure the forces he experiences during an impact, and joints which simulate the actual movements of a child's limbs. Pinocchio was designed by Dr Freek Bastiaanse at TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, in Delft.
