BOSASSO, SOMALIA- DECEMBER 2007.Clouded by the fumes of burning plastic, a muddy patch of wasteland on the Mogadishu Road isthe main dropping off point for passengers arriving from Somalia's south. Trucks and small busesconverge on the site located a few kilometres outside Bossaso town. From here, the only routesahead are the small stony tracks that hug Puntland's coast. As they climb down from overloaded trucks, many of the travellers are met by smugglerswho quickly whisk them away to hidden halfway houses dotting the slums and camps of thissupposed coastal haven. Disorientated after such a long journey, others easily fall prey to theexploitative middlemen of gangs, or thieves offering would-be advice, only to rob the newarrivals of the little money or possessions they have on their way into town.
