MATERNAL MORTALITY
SHAHR-I-BUZORG, AFGHANISTAN- AUGUST 2008.Traditional Birth Attendant Hanifa holds her empty tool kit in which she normally keeps basic equipment to assist with child births in Khordakon village. Before her training seven years ago, Hanifa used to use flints for cutting and piles of earth for soaking up blood during the hundreds of births she has assisted. Now she likes to use plastic gloves and sheeting and clean razors and needles but access to these items in this remote region of Badakshan is difficult. "I always reassure the women in delivery but there is nothing I can really do". (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
