AEGYPTEN WUESTE BEDUINEN
Members of the Tarabin Bedouin tribe prepare for their "iftar", or breaking of the fast, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, January 6, 1999, at the Ain Um Ahmad oasis in Egypt's Sinai desert. Many Bedouin in the region have abandoned their traditional nomadic lifestyle and succumbed to government efforts to settle them in established communities. But in remote oases and hillside camps, some still cling to the wilder ways of their forebears: raising goats, herding camels, cooking over open fires and shunning town life.
