MARTIAN VOLCANOS
Martian volcanos. Artwork of active volcanos erupting on the surface of planet Mars. The volcano at top centre, emitting a smoke plume, is typical of the shield structure found on Mars. Atmospheric pollution, as a result of the volcanic activity, has caused a haze that is blocking out the sun (top right). Mars is an arid, rocky planet, its surface and atmosphere coloured red by rocks and dust rich in iron. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/CHRIS BUTLER)
