TIERE SCHMETTERLING
Butterfly wing. Close-up of the underside of the hind wing of a common birdwing butterfly (Troides helena cerberus). The surfaces of the wings are covered in transparent layers of scales. These scales have tiny ridges on them that break up and reflect light, giving the butterfly its shimmering iridescent appearance. Birdwings are the largest butterflies, with wingspans of up to 31 centimetres, and the sexes are differently coloured. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/DR KEITH WHEELER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
