Production and decay of a B-zero meson in the ALEPH detector at CERN, the particle physics lab near Geneva. The computer display shows in cross- section the innermost part of the detector, white lines representing silicon strips detectors. An unseen electron and positron, accelerated to high energy in CERN's LEP collider, annihilate at centre to create a B meson consisting of a bottom quark bound with a strange antiquark. The B meson is unseen but decays, in several stages (see A142/449 for close-up) to produce an electron (green track), an unseen neutrino, 2 kaons (blue) and a pion (yellow).
