A MILLION SHILLINGS
SHIMBIRO, SOMALIA- DECEMBER 2007 .As smugglers run back and forth through the water making last minute preparations, a crew member from a boat moored off the coast at Shimbiro returns to shore with a hammer. Many of the tiny fishing boats used by the smuggling networks are unreliable; as engines fail and the unstable vessels take on water, they frequently run into difficulties on the high seas. After carrying out repairs to the floating vessel, now packed with its human cargo, the hammer will subsequently be used as a weapon against the tahrib. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
