SUEDAFRIKA MANDELA BIKO GRAB 1997
President Nelson Mandela lays a wreath at the grave of Black Consciousness (BC) leader Steve Biko, who died in police detention in 1977, in Ginsburg, near East London 12 September. Mandela praised Biko for his contribution in the fight for freedom. Senior security branch officers have appeared this week before the Truth and Reconciliation Commision (TRC) amnesty hearing for their involvement in Biko's death, which they had earlier claimed was accidental, and during testimony two have admitted that he was subjected to inhumane treatment which could have caused his death.
