GROSSBRITANNIEN COMPUTERTOMOGRAPHIE GODFREY HOUNSFIELD
Godfrey Hounsfield, British inventor of the Computed Tomography or CT scanner used for medical diagnosis. He is seen in 1972 beside the prototype scanner he designed in that year. A computer expert at British company EMI, Hounsfield began work in 1967 to combine the power of the computer with X-ray scanning. His scanner uses a series of X-ray beams angled around the patient to produce "slice" images through the body at high resolut- ion. Medical diagnosis sing CT scanners began in the early 1970's. Hounsfield was awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize for medicine for this work, together with Alan Cormack, the South African physicist who developed the theory of X-ray tomography.
