PORTRAIT OF JEAN FABRE
Jean Fabre (1823-1915), French entomologist. Fabre was a poor teacher for most of his life, it was only at the age of 50 that he could devote time to field studies in entomology. In 1878 he set up a small open-air laboratory on a plot of land in Provence. His work started on parasitic wasps, but extended to various insect groups. His writings eventually culminated in a ten-volume work, now considered a classic in the subject. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
