David Davila, 18, stands with his good friend Auturo Mata, 25, behind Homeboy Industries, where he has been working full time as a Therapist Assistant for around the last half year. Homeboy is a gang prevention center in Downtown Los Angeles run by Father Gregory Boyle for over 20 years, where youths from rival gangs work and receive self-improvement classes and therapy side by side. Homeboy offers many services that try to help young people redirect their lives in a positive way and provide them with hope for their future. Homeboy has provided Davila with counseling, GED classes, anger management classes, a job, friendships and community. Davila currently lives in Hawthorne, Ca., which is just outside Los Angeles city limits and has been a member of the Muertos 13 (death) gang since he was 12; he has also been in and out of juvenile detention camps since that same age. He recently decided to change his life by getting an honest job, along with trying to obey the law. (KEYSTONE/CAVAN IMAGES/Justin Maxon)
