Gabriel Hinojos, 29, (right), talks to David Davila, 18, (left) in his home in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles, CA, as his son, Gabriel Jr. Hinojos, 6, gives him a hug. Hinojos speaks about the steps Davila needs to take to remove himself from the gang he is part of and how to and create a better life thereafter. Davila lives in the house of his friend's aunt in Hawthorne, CA, which is just outside Los Angeles city limits. He has been part of the Muerto 13 (dead) gang since he was 12 and has also been in and out of juvenile detention camps since the same age. In the last six months he decided to change his life by getting an honest job, along with trying to obey the law. Hinojos explains the importance of moving away from the neighborhood Davila grew up in, because it is much harder to change his life if he is still living where he started being involved in gang activity. He also told Davila that he could crash on his couch any time he needed. Hinojos uses his own experience to help Davila because he himself was once part of the Florence 13 gang. For the last 4 years, Hinojos has been trying to separate himself from his past gang life, although he has hit a number of speed bumps along the way. (KEYSTONE/CAVAN IMAGES/Justin Maxon)
