Sergei Eisenstein, Soviet Russian film director and film theorist, 1948. Eisenstein (1898-1948) is regarded as one of the most influential directors in cinema history. In the 1930s he made the highly acclaimed silent films 'Strike' (1925), 'Battleship Potemkin' (1925) and 'October' (1928), and later in the sound era returned to prominence with his historical epics 'Alexander Nevsky' (1938) and the 'Ivan the Terrible' trilogy (1944-1946).
