DEUTSCHLAND BERLIN MAUERBAU BAU 1961
An elderly lady, assisted by two men, climbs out of a window of a house to get to West Berlin, in Bernauer Strasse, East Berlin, September 1961. The house is built on East German territory on the demarcation line of the Soviet Sector, while the Bernauer Street belonged to West Berlin. After the Wall was built on August 13, 1961 all traffic between East and West Berlin was cut off. The Wall, claimed by East German propaganda as 'antifascist wall of protection' intended to avoid aggression from the West, was in truth built in response to the flight of about 2.5 million East Germans to West Germany in the years 1949-61. On November 9, 1989 the Wall was opened and Germany reunified. (KEYSTONE/DPA/STR)
