USA MUSIK MAHALIA JACKSON
Mahalia Jackson, "Queen of the Gospel Singers," practices a new song in her Chicago apartment, August 30, 1955. The 44-year-old singer, who had no musical training and only a few years of formal education, stars on her own radio network program, sings in concert, and has made a triumphant tour of Europe. Miss Jackson was born in a waterfront shack in New Orleans. At age 10 she was taking care of babies, and at 13 was working as a washerwoman. Deeply religious, she sang in Baptist churches from childhood on. It was this singing which first attracted attention. (AP Photo/Edward Kitch)
