A giant VLBI antenna from the Norwegian Mapping Authority (NMA) turns on Spitsbergen in Ny-Aelesund, Norway, 09 April 2015. The installation has been working since 1992 as part of a global network of VLBI antennas, and measures the earth's rotation speed, monitors continental movement, and helps with the prediction of earthquakes and tsunamis. Since 2003, German and French scientists have been working at the AWIPEV Arctic Research Base in the former miners' settlement in the Svalbard archipelago. The scientific work conducted at the Koldewey Station includes monitoring the north polar stratosphere and research by oceanographers, marine geologists, ice physicists on life in and at the Arctic Ocean.
