***BILD GESPERRT***
Algiers, Algeria. I finally met my 99 year old Berber grandmother and took this self-portrait, just a year before she would die. We talked for hours, as I recorded our conversations. Though we only had this short time together, I can listen now to these recordings and feel that something of her remains with me. Berbers are an ethnic group native to Kabylia, in northern Algeria and is located a hundred miles east of Algiers. They represent the largest Berber-speaking population in Algeria and the second largest in the continent of Africa. . (KEYSTONE/VII Photo/Linda Bournane Engelberth)
