CERN, located near Geneva, Switzerland, is the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, the world's largest particle physics research centre. Founded in 1954, the Laboratory was one of Europe's first joint ventures, and has become a shining example of international collaboration. From the Original 12 signatories of the Cern convention, membership has grown to the present 19 member states. Some 6500 scientist, half of the world's particle physicists, use Cern facilities. Cern's business is pure science, exploring nature's most fundamental questions like the function of stars, planets and human beings. The experiments take place in a circular tunnel buried 100 meters underground. The picture shows a technician working inside of the world's largest scientific instrument,27 km circumference underground: the LEP accelerator.
