NEPAL SIR EDMUND HILLARY
Sir Edmund HIllary, the first man to climb Mount Everest, who has died aged 88. Shown in the full climbing outfit with open circuit oxygen apparatus is Edmund Hillary, 33 year old New Zealander from Auckland, who, with the Sherpa Tensing, reached the summit of the world's highest mountain, Everest. They were the first men ever to set foot on the 29,002 ft summit. This picture from Kathmandu Nepal - was taken after the return of the successful British expedition, led by Colonel John Hunt.
