Leon Foucault (1819-1868), French physicist. Foucault is most famous for his invention of the Foucault pendulum in 1850. This device was a giant pendulum that was used to prove the Earth's rotation about its axis. Foucault also showed that light moves slower in water, providing evidence for the wave theory of light. The Foucault crater on the Moon is named after him. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/EMILIO SEGRE VISUAL ARCHIVES/AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
