French and Vietnamese paratroopers, dropped south of Nghia Lo, 100 miles northwest of Hanoi, wait in a hastily constructed trench for a possible assault by the Communist-led Viet Minh forces during the enemy's advance from the Red River to the Black River, Oct. 1952. The paratroopers bore much of the brunt in opposing the Viet Minh advance towards the Black River in heavy fighting in the mountainous Thai country the last half of October. Exact date is unknown.
