Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned as managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the fund said late 18 May, four days after he was arrested and accused in the sexual assault of a hotel maid in New York. Strauss-Kahn said in a letter to the IMF board that he was resigning immediately 'to protect this institution, which I have served with honour and devotion,' according to a statement from the fund.
