NAGASAKI 1945
Radiation burn scar tissue, Hiroshima. Close-up of keloids (darker areas) formed on the shoulder of a victim of the Hiroshima nuclear explosion. Keloids are fibrous overgrowths of scar tissue that form following an injury, in this case radiation burns to the skin. The US atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima was detonated on 6th August 1945 during World War II. At least 80,000 people died and many thousands were injured and left permanently disfigured. Another atomic bomb was detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki on 9th August 1945. Japan surrendered a few days later. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/NATIONAL MUSEUM OF HEALTH AND MEDICINE)
