6 images recording detonation of 1st atomic bomb. Sequence of 6 images recording detonation of World's first atomic bomb, at 5:30 a.m., July 16, 1945, in desert near Alamogordo Air Base, New Mexico. Codenamed "Trinity", the explosion illuminated the night sky "with an intensity many times that of the midday sun", shattered windows 125 miles away and produced a mushroom cloud between 50,000 and 70,000 feet in height. "Trinity" was the result of over 2 years' work by a group of engineers and scientists based at Los Alamos, New Mexico, led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. Three weeks after the "Trinity" explosion, a second atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, Japan. Photographed by U.S. Army motion picture camera at distance of 8 miles from blast.
