USA ATOMBOMBE TEST 1945
Manhattan Project radiation suits. Members of the Manhattan Project pose in primitive radiation suits prior to inspecting the site of the world's first atomic bomb explosion. The protective clothing seems to consist of a boiler suit, gloves, overshoes, a scarf tied over the head, goggles and a standard gas mask. People dressed in this manner drove toward the centre of the test site in New Mexico to recover instruments a few hours after the explosion on July 16, 1945. They kept clear of 'ground zero' (the actual centre) for several days due to the dangerously high radioactivity. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
