WWII - CONCENTRATION CAMP BESSARABIA
Jewish prisoners stand behind a barbed wire fence in a concentration camp in Bessarabia (today Romania), around 1941/1942. With the German attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, Romanian troops (Armata Romana) reconquered Bessarabia, which was occupied by the Soviets. In this context, the Jewish population was accused of sympathizing with the Soviet Union, which they considered as liberators in the light of Hitler's anti-Semitic extermination policy in 1940. As a result in 1941/42, Jewish people were deported to camps established in Transnistria (now Ukraine and Moldova), which was controlled by the SS .
