USA BOXEN SCHMELING LOUIS 1936
World heavyweight boxing champion Max Schmeling raises his hands in victory after referee Arthur Donovan counts out Joe Louis in 12th round knockout in New York City, in this June 19, 1936 photo. Schmeling died on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, according to the Max Schmeling Foundation in Hamburg. He was 99. No cause of death was given. Schmeling earned his first title on June 12, 1930 when he beat U.S. boxer Jack Sharkey in New York, and he defeated American great Joe Louis in a 1936 nontitle bout. (AP Photo)
