RUSSLAND WAFFEN MICHAIL KALASCHNIKOW
Russian designer Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of the world's most famous assault rifle, the AK-47, aims a current version of his weapon at a shooting range in the Russian city of Izhevsk, about 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) east of Moscow , Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002. Kalashnikov, who turned 83 on Nov. 11, remains proud of the weapon but said it always saddens him to hear when one of the weapons of his design is used for nefarious purposes. Since production of the weapon started Nov. 23, 1949 for the Soviet armed forces, more than 75 million of the robust rifles have been produced worldwide - most the well-known AK-47. (AP Photo/ Str)
