HOCHSEE TIEFSEETAUCHEN PICCARD 1953
A crane lowers Professor Auguste Piccard's bathyscaph into the water at the Castellammare shipyards where the diving craft, named “Trieste” was constructed. From there the bathyscaph was hauled out to the water off the island of Ponza, Sept. 27, 1953, where the Swiss-born scientist and his son, Jacques on September 30 beat all records, arriving at 3,150 meters (10,330 feet) depth.
