ERSTER WELTKRIEG USA DEUTSCHES U-BOOT
German U-boat. Crowd around a U-boat in New York. U-boat is short for Unterseeboot, the German word for submarine, and is used to refer to the German naval submarines from the First and Second World Wars. They targeted merchant vessels bringing supplies to Europe from the USA and Canada. This image is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/LIBRARY OF CONGRESS)
