- Oyster farming in the Pertuis d'Antioche, France 1992 - Pertuis d'Antoiche is a sound between the Île de Ré, the Île d'Oléron and the mainland, offering ideal conditions for fattening oysters and cultivating mussels: protection against storms, a sea-water salt content that is beneficial to shellfishes, and a tidal amplitude of up to 6.8 m in the intertidal zone. Nutritious plankton is washed onto the oyster and mussel beds in the mud flats. The oyster farmers live in constant fear of a marine catastrophe that could reduce the purity of the water and thus ruin their livelihood for years, if not decades.
