Day laborers wait for work at the corner of Lawrence and Springfield on Chicago's Northwest Side. Every morning at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Springfield Avenue on Chicago's Northwest Side, laborers wait for contractors to arrive and offer them jobs for the day. Wages run from $5 to $12 per hour. The police often harass, and occasionally arrest, the workers. Despite these difficulties, day laborers have formed worker centers throughout the United States and continue to fight a daily battle for dignity, decent wages and civil and human rights...During the past decade, millions of Mexican and Central American migrants have left their homes and families, faced death on the journey to the United States and lived under the specter of criminality once in this country.
