MUKALLA, YEMEN- MAY2008 .Having arrived with the bright lights of the port city of Mukalla in their sights, a boatload of Somali refugees were quickly spotted by police and transferred to a local station. Taking frivolous risks, smugglers have been taunting Yemeni authorities by dumping their human cargo on beaches just a few kilometres away from the urban centre. Soaked through with seawater, a group of more than one hundred Somalis have been permitted to use the washrooms at the police station. Bathing and rinsing out their clothes, one by one they hang them on a long line to dry. As the officers try to glean information, much of the group crouch half-dressed in silence, unsure what will happen to them next. Within a few hours, a bus and truck will come to transport the latest new arrivals nearly two hundred kilometres along the coast to a transit centre at Mayfa'ah. It will be an anxious journey for them. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
