MAYFA'AH, YEMEN- MAY 2008 .Arriving in the early hours of the morning at the UNHCR run Mayfa'ah Reception Centre, exhausted migrants and refugees carry mattresses as they search for a resting place in thepartitioned male and female areas.Following a forty-eight hour journey on boats from Somalia, the sheer tiredness on their facesis all too apparent. Women struggle to lift the heavy mattresses and bedding, as their childrenbarely keep up behind them. The men wander off in the opposite direction, bleary-eyed andin silence. With several boatloads having arrived in the last few days, there is little room to liedown in the breezeblock bungalows. After going from door to door searching for space, manysimply drop to the ground outside. When they wake up to their first morning in Yemen, theywill be given tea and porridge, clean clothes and have their first bath in a few days. The mostneeded thing right now though is sleep.
