SHIMBIRO, SOMALIA- DECEMBER 2007 .Waking up to their last dawn in Somalia, a tired group of tahrib rub their eyes as they taketheir first look at the landscape of Ras Shimbiro. Dropped off by smugglers' trucks in theearly hours of the morning, they have spent a restless night laid out amid the rocks in totaldarkness. Few have slept properly. The incessant noise of a rip tide, along with the wailing ofhyenas, the clicking of Kalashnikov clips, and the noise of cries and coughing from motionlessbodies, have made this an uncomfortable night. As the smugglers and militia sleep soundlysurrounded by barrels of petrol, the migrants and refugees sit still for now, too nervous toventure far. Most of the voyagers fix their eyes on three small boats anchored at the shore. It will be evening before they embark with the three hundred other passengers, and set offon the dangerous voyage across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen.
