LONDON BUS DRIVERS ON THE FRONT LINE
Trafalgar Square. London. UK April 2, 2020.View of Trafalgar Square from the upper level of a London bus...General Intro Text:.There were 2.2 billion journeys on London's buses in the year to March 2019, far more than the 1.37 billion in the same period on the London Underground. Although service frequencies have been substantially cut during the pandemic, London's bus network still reaches further than other modes of public transport into the peripheral estates that house many critical workers. ..Yet drivers faced management's reluctance to make changes in dealing with the dangers posed to drivers by the virus. Up until late April, passengers were still boarding via the front doors, and tapping their Oyster cards ( transport payment cards) on electronic readers close to the driver...Some drivers started unilaterally blocking off the front few seats by their cabs and telling passengers to enter by the exit doors in the middle of the vehicle. In response, a manager at Arriva – one of the private companies that owns and operates the buses on contract to Transport for London (TfL) – warned drivers they could face disciplinary action over such steps, although the company later apologised...From April 20, TfL told bus operators to close front doors, block off seats nearest the driver and exempt passengers from touching.in. Claire Mann, TfL's director of bus operations, says driver safety is the group's “absolute priority”, and it has brought in enhanced cleaning procedures and improved protection for drivers' cabs..But the late introduction of those measures seem all but certain to have cost lives..By April 27, 28 of London's 31,000 bus operating staff were reported to have died after testing positive for Covid-19 – about 16 times the rate of the NHS, where 82 of 1.5 million staff have died. Vauxhall Bus Station. London. UK. April 12, 2020.Derrick Meikle .“Its very frightening because people are coming on the bus sneezing and coughing and I tell them they should stay at home and quarantine which is safer for myself and the other bus users.I am based in Battersea. We've got no fatalities that we know of, we have at least 4 or 5 people sick with the Corona virus at the moment. As you know the government is'nt a government for the people, its government for Brexit, and immigration, thats what its for. Thats what people wanted in the country and thats what they got.this is what they're getting now. No support for the hospitals, maybe they want to sell it to the Americans, but now the crisis has burst out all over the world, not one country but everywhere for the first time. Its very serious and frightening.”..General Intro Text:.There were 2.2 billion journeys on London's buses in the year to March 2019, far more than the 1.37 billion in the same period on the London Underground. Vauxhall Bus Station. London. UK. April 12, 2020.Abdul Rouf. .“The road is quiet, hardly any traffic but you do get some passengers coming in here coughing, its scary because I lost 4 of my colleagues from the same depot, Westbourne Park Garage, the last one died the day before yesterday, 4 bus drivers died of the Corona virus, its really scary and theres no way to have safe distance because they have to come close to touch their passes , about a foot and a half away. They've given us gloves, some hand sanitiser, and sanitiser to wipe everything we touch, thats about it. I have been driving a bus for the last 25 years and I have never been scared of my life like this before. You cant see this virus, if you have got it or not and you can pass it to your family- thats the worrying thing. If I die thats no problem, but the effect I might pass to my family, thats the main concern. My wife is really worried, she doesnt want me to come to work but we have to live a life , earn some money, and thats it.”..General Intro Text:.There were 2.2 billion journeys on London's buses in the year to March 2019, far more than the 1.37 billion in the same period on the London Underground. Vauxhall Bus Station. London. UK. April 12, 2020.Petrine Forde .“For me on the whole its been frightening because I have children, so going home and knowing that I have to literally isolate myself -wash my hands, make sure my footwear, clothing is away from other clothes and I rotate my uniform, washing them every other day to make sure I dont carry any germs into the house. Having unsociable people come on the bus who come close to the glass, and dont keep their distance, is more frightening especially if they show symptoms of coughing , and are not so hygienic. It can make you a bit more wary. But on the whole, the public have been quite pleasant. They are trying to keep their distance as best they can, but you do get a lot of people who do not keep their distance when entering the bus. So it depends on the individual. Aprt from that I'm happy. I wear a mask, when I am not in fresh air circulation, I actually wear goggles as well because I dont want it to enter through my eyes or my ears or droplets into my mouth. So I do my best , I wash my hands every hour and I sanitise with the NHS' s help- thank you for the hand gel that you gave us, the hand sanitiser, very gratefully received. My moral is we all have a destiny, so if youre going to get the Covid 19 virus youre just going to get it, theres no way of stopping it, but you can always do your best to prevent it from happening. Thats it really.”..General Intro Text:.There were 2.2 billion journeys on London's buses in the year to March 2019, far more than the 1.37 billion in the same period on the London Underground. The worst thing is confrontations with one of two controllers, most of them are fine. Its an attitude problem -they look down on drivers, we are just doing our job and I dont like being talked down to. We are the eyes of the road, we should be listened to, wes hould be working as a team. ..The virus is very scary to be working during these times. Some days we are given wipes, and gels or if they are in stock rubber gloves, but I bring my own. Protective materials are available ‘if its there'- but really it should be a standard thing enforced every day. ..Since Monday ( April 20) they have enforced using the back door only, but that should have been from the start. Its taken deaths for them to open their eyes- its not a joke this is really happening...I dont think we are being told the full picture here about drivers deaths, its a guessing game - a stat is thrown out there and it becomes like Chinese whispers , its never the full 100% truth...(Talking about Stockwell garage) Its like a family- everyone is made to feel welcome there, its a good multi-cultural garage. I just ove the environment, staff from other garage when they come to do overtime all say its a really different atmosphere, nobody feels excluded, its all nationalities- African, Polish, Pakistani, Irish , Jamaican- all nationalities and everyone is made to feel welcome there."..General Intro Text:.There were 2.2 billion journeys on London's buses in the year to March 2019, far more than the 1.37 billion in the same period on the London Underground.
