At 5.46am on 17 January 1995, the city of Kobe was hit by the largest earthquake in Japan since 1923. The earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter Scale resulted in more than 5,500 fatalities, over 300,000 people became homeless and damage worth an estimated 143 billion euros was caused to roads, houses, factories and infrastructure.
